We all know that solar panels are required to produce solar electricity but do you know how do solar panels work?

Solar Panels – just how do they work?

All electricity ’sources’ use the same way of generating and transmitting electricity. Electrons in the solar cell material flow through the circuit and it is this flow of electrons that gives rise to an electrical current. Pure silicon is the element which happens to be the basic unit of solar panels.

To make the silicon transmit electrons properly, you first have to turn it into an ideal platform that is neutral and all the impurities hidden in silicon have to be stripped. Silicon also has a lot of other properties which lend it to working in an appliance such as a solar panel.

How sunlight is transformed to energy in the solar panel

There is also another element used in solar panels to make them work and that is boron. When the silicon and boron combine, the result is an overall positive chargem and so energy can flow. Sunlight is made up of photons of light, and these photons are the primary ingredient used in the transformation of light energy to electrical energy.

Solar panels work by taking in photons and converting this energy into something useable – electricity. As said earlier, the silicon atoms in solar panels unite with their siblings and as a result electrons are shared. Combining the photons with the silicon results in electricity. To make more energy, you need more silicon and more sunlight e.g. more than one solar cell.

So while it may seem that solar panels are complicated items, you don’t necessarily need to understand them to be able to use them.

The fact is, you can use solar panels to create a lot of free electricity for your home.

There are lots of solar panel guides online that show you how to build your own solar panel for less than $200.

Where as a “professional” system installed on your home could be as much as five thousand dollars.
